Hosting LiveWorkPlay Open House at Bayview Yards

It’s been a little more than 4 months since our abrupt move from the flooded and closed Pebb Building to our new home at Bayview Yards, and we finally had the opportunity to celebrate! I also hosted a live edition of The LiveWorkPlay News as part of the formal agenda, but my favourite part of this (in addition to introducing out amazing guest speakers Lisa Hewston representing Bayview Yards and Robin McIntyre, Chair of the LiveWorkPlay Board of Directors) was to share some local history as part of a meaningful land acknowledgement.

If you are feeling like your land acknowledgements have become rote and lack authenticity, listen to your instincts, it’s probably true. I am not any sort of expert on this, but from what I have learned speaking to indigenous people and organizations, my choice to focus on local river systems and wilderness areas and express my appreciation for what indigenous communities have done to protect those environments to the benefit of all, is a message that resonates.

Depending on the context, I also speak directly to the abuses of the residential schools institutions and the connection to other repressed and oppressed populations, including people with intellectual disabilities. The point is not to minimize or distract from the experience of indigenous persons, but rather to reflect on how what we have learned guides us in social justice efforts that extend beyond that experience alone, and to make meaningful connections for building healthier communities where all citizens are welcomed, included, and appreciated.
